□ Name: Rukia Kuchiki
□ Journal: [personal profile] figurante
□ Series: Bleach
□ Canon point: Chapter 479
□ History: http://bleach.wikia.com/wiki/Rukia_Kuchiki
□ Personality: Rukia may come across a bit odd at to normal humans as the modern human world is new to her, and her sources of information - Ichigo, his friends, and books (usually shoujo manga) lying around his house - don't give her a clear picture of what's the norm. She also has no problems doing things such as setting up her bedroom in Ichigo's closet or 'borrowing' his youngest sister's clothes without letting any of them know; if she feels as if someone owes her a favor or debt, she has no problems collecting upon them. However, in Soul Society, Rukia comes across as more refined and not as exuberant as she is in the human world, probably aware that her behavior and conduct would also reflect on the Kuchiki name. Rukia has a tendency to use hand-drawn pictures to illustrate her points and seems to consider herself a good artist, as she's extremely offended when Ichigo asks why her artwork is completely terrible. Rukia also appears to have a soft spot for rabbits, as seen from her drawings where she draws nearly everything as one, and is shown to be a huge fan of the rabbit mascot, Chappy.

Despite her flippancy, she takes her responsibilities seriously, with a no-nonsense attitude to her obligations, believing firmly in her duty as a Shinigami to protect humans; during her battle with Riruka, she's determined to defeat, not kill, her enemy, sticking to her belief that a Shinigami's duty is to protect humans. Even when she loses all her powers, she does her best to perform the assignment given to her, first by insisting that Ichigo act as a Shinigami substitute in her stead, then by assisting and training Ichigo to be better prepared against Hollows. In one instance, she even takes on a Hollow by herself when seperated from Ichigo, although she was dismayed to find out that her attacks were of little effect. However, she refused to give up and teamed up with Chad, using all of her wits and skills to compensate for her lack of power.

In fact, she takes her responsibility almost to the point of self-sacrifice; in her first meeting with Ichigo, she protects him by taking a serious attack meant for him that would have been fatal from the Hollow that targeted him. Later on, when she realizes that her brother, Byakuya Kuchiki, and childhood friend, Renji Abarai, have come to arrest and take her back to Soul Society, she leaves Ichigo's house without warning, leaving only a goodbye letter that explained nothing, not wanting Ichigo to get caught up in her problems. Even when he catches up to her and confronts the other two Shinigami, losing in the process, she manages to convince her brother to hold back the killing blow and tries to dissuade Ichigo from following her by acting cold and dismissive towards him, feeling as she had already intruded on his life enough.

While not exactly quiet or shy in any form, Rukia is not very open and forthcoming about her own emotions. She's used to taking care of and relying on herself, having grown up by herself with no caretaker, although she has a natural tendency to butt in and take charge of situations, even as a child; she trips a adult chasing a group of children her age, one of them being a young Renji, and then commands them to follow her to lose the adult despite having never seen them before in her life, and somehow becomes a part of their 'family'. She was also the one to propose the idea of joining the Shinigami Academy to become Shinigami, giving the reason that it sounded pretty over there. However, she and Renji become estranged when Rukia was suddenly adopted by the Kuchiki family and finds herself isolated from others; while most Shinigami were polite and deferential to her face, they would belittle and deride her behind her back out of jealousy because of her standing in a noble family. She spent many years afraid of her adopted brother, never sure of what he was thinking; she was shocked when he saved her from Gin and Aizen. Their relationship has shown improvement, as Rukia seems to be more open to her brother now, such as when he helps her sneak into Hueco Mundo.

She cares deeply for friends; as Ichigo and her classmates break into Soul Society, she can sense the battles they fight and their reiatsu. She despairs when she feels Renji's reiatsu fading away even though they were estranged, and her last wish that she asks Yamamoto as she is about to be executed is to pardon the intruders and let them leave Soul Society. When Orihime is kidnapped, Rukia is angry and ready to rush out and rescue her right away. In fact she deliberately disobeys orders to rescue her, displaying no guilt or regret at doing so as she can understand what Orihime is feeling, having just gone through similar circumstances herself - the loneliness of being a captive, the happiness when saved by friends, and the horror of knowing all the pain they must have gone through. She can also be fierce in her faith in her friends, as shown when Ichigo overhears her denying that he's sided with their enemies. She can also be quite strict and unrelenting - when Ichigo gains back his powers and is able to see Rukia once again, she warmly greets her long-lost friend before immediately kicking him in the face and yells him for turning into a weakling and crying while she was gone, scolding him to for giving in and up to despair, reminding him that he can control his future.

The man who had impacted Rukia the most was Kaien Shiba, the lieutenant of the 13th squad, who was the first person to treat Rukia as a normal person since her adoption into the Kuchiki family, and her mentor and friend. Admiring both Kaien and his kind, beautiful wife, Miyako, idolizing the latter, Rukia was shocked and devastated when Miyako was murdered by a Hollow. When Kaien hunted down the Hollow that killed his wife, Rukia tried to join in the fight, wanting to help even though he had asked to fight it alone; the captain of the 13th squad held her back, reminding her that Kaien had wanted to fight alone. Unfortunately, to Rukia's horror, the Hollow ends up possessing and fusing with Kaien before targeting Rukia and turning his blade on her. She ends up killing Kaien herself, an act that horribly traumatizes Rukia as Kaien's personality resurfaces and apologizes for frightening Rukia before he dies. Blaming herself for his death, she was unable to forgive herself or to apologize to Kaien's sister and brother when she returned his body to them, instead carrying the guilt on her shoulders for years. When informed of her execution, she resigns herself to her fate, believing it to be retribution for killing Kaien; when she hears that Ichigo has broken into Soul Society, she wonders if she's even worth saving.

Even after she's been rescued and manages to finally gather up the courage and apologize to Kaien's siblings, she was still unable to forgive herself. When the ninth Espada, Aaroniero Arruruerie, approached Rukia pretending to be Kaien, he reminded her that she was the one who killed him and if she was prepared to be killed by him. While she admits that she was, that was was a crime that would never be able to fade away, and would happily offer her own life if it would ease Kaien's sadness even only just a little bit, she had come here to help Inoue and her friends - and so, she could not offer her own life up just yet, as she she had a duty she must fulfill to her friends. When he then asks for her to bring the heads of her friends, she realizes that Kaien, as someone who valued friends, would never ask her of that; furious that he was insulting Kaien's memory, she attacks the Espada in a rage, claiming that he could not be him. However, despite her words, she still remains uncertain and doubtful as they fight, and finds herself holding back. But once she manages to confirm and ascertain that he was not actually Kaien, she manages to defeat the Espada as she remembers her mentor's words to never die alone, in order to pass on her 'heart' to her friends, realizing that Kaien had passed on his heart to her when he died at her hands.

As a Shinigami, Rukia has a variety of skills and powers, such as enhanced durability, strength, speed, extended lifespan, Kido arts, not to mention skilled and powerful enough to become the second in command (Lieutenant/Vice-Captain) of the 13th Division. Her greatest strength are her Kido spells - she was the highest of her class and can use several high-leveled ones in rapid succession or at once and still maintain great control and power over them. She can effectively hold her own either with her Zanpakuto, a katana-like blade, or in hand to hand combat; she was able to successfully defend herself against enemies in hand to hand combat while she was without her Shinigami abilities and defeating the ninth Espada who was using the expert swordsmanship of her mentor. She's also able to control ice with her Zanpakuto's release form, able to encase her opponents in solid blocks of ice or reforging her broken blade with ice. She is also extremely agile and able to at high speeds, possibly due to her small size and stature.
